Back in the day, comps were critical for punk rock.  Whether it be Epitaph's

Punk-O-Rama, Fat Wreck Chords' Fat Music for Fat People or Hopeless

Record's Hopelessly Devoted To You, comps were an awesome way for

a label to get every band on their roster onto one release for a cheap price.

These comps allowed punk fans to hear songs from their favorite bands such

as Rancid and Bad Religion as well as songs from bands they might have

heard before, like Gas Huffer (see Punk-O-Rama 1).

In today's world of purchasing individual songs from iTunes or

downloading a band's new EP from Bandcamp for little to nothing,

comps have almost become an endangered species.

A few weeks ago I came across a promo copy of the new New York

City punk comp called Cause A Scene, Volume 1, which will formally be

released by Bright & Barrow Records next Tuesday (Aug. 31).  After

listening to it multiple times now, I gotta tell you that there is not a single

weak track in this 22 track comp (yes, 22 tracks!) of bands that all reside in

the greater New York area.  Taking a cue from the comps that we have all

grown up on, Cause A Scene couples bands that are a little more known like

The Measure (SA) and House Boat with great bands that I had never hard

of before like The Break Evens and Stewart.

Although this comp will only be available for purchase (at a cheap price) via

download, the good folks at Bright Barrow have burned 10 copies of

Cause A Scene for us to give away to you.
